Waveform Display

Monday, November 21st, 2011

I started making this program in late 2008 and pretty much abandoned it in 2009. But a few days ago, someone told me that they wanted a program like this, so I got my finger out and touched up a few parts, and am releasing it to the public now!

Waveform Display plays a sound file (WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, WMA) and, as the name suggests, shows a waveform of the sound as it plays. But it can additionally display the waveform on a Logitech G15 LCD, “bend” the waveform into a 640×480 picture, or send the waveform to an EasyLase. There are options to change the waveform scaling width-ways (time) and height-ways (amplitude), and there is also a VU meter with its own scaling options that can be reflected in up to 8 lights controlled via the parallel port. Playback speed can be changed from 1/8x to 8x, and it can handle files which are several hours long since it does not decode the whole file to RAM first. There are also some experimental (read: buggy and given-up on) options such as to play the sound on an internal PC speaker. There’s a very basic and glitchy pitch detection function, but it’s only designed for monophonic sounds such as speech.

You can download the program from here.

The current version is revision 13. The Miku image in the screenshot above is not included, to respect the artist. Instead, please enjoy a photo of my cat as the default picture. “version info.txt” (included in the download) has details about everything that’s new or has changed in each version. I’ve not yet made any documentation (info.txt), but I’ll do this soon and add it to the ZIP download. I’ll also add a section to the Programs page for Waveform Attempt soon.

[Lasershow] IOSYS – Dark/Light [HD]

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

This is the first of the 2 laser shows I made for Touhou-sai 2011. This song is by ARM of IOSYS, titled 「闇光」 (I hope my “Dark/Light” translation is okay).

[Watch in HD]

Although this was meant to be a beam show, I made some danmaku-like patterns that can’t be seen properly in the air, so I included a view of it projecting directly onto a flat surface so these can be seen easily.

[Lasershow] Hinarin’s Relative of Misfortune [IOSYS] [HD]

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

This is the second laser show I made for Touhou-sai 2011. The song is 「ひなりんのヤクい関係」, a remix of Hina Kagiyama’s theme, with vocals by Ruru Ichinose. (I’m uploading this one first because the video for the other one requires more editing.)

[Watch in HD]

I made this show in a rush in 2 days, after spending a week or so on my other (Dark/Light) show and realising that it looked nowhere near as good as I had hoped it would. Why do things that I put less effort into turn out better?

London Touhou-Sai Compilation (June 2011) [HD]

Monday, June 27th, 2011

On the night of the 24th of June, in a little underground venue, some fans got together and had an awesome time at what was the first ever entirely Touhou Project-based music event in the UK.

[Watch in HD]

The size didn’t stop everyone from having an awesome time. Several people DJ’d (including Piloru), and there were a couple of special guest acts – Masa-kun on the electric violin and Cassis and Ai-chan from the “Oh My Lord!” maid café. I helped out with fog and 2 laser beam-shows (which I’ll re-record and upload in their own videos some time), and Dnstje was kind enough to offer me his Bad Apple graphic laser show.

Is this the start of more to come?

As I was helping out, many of these video clips are all from around the DJ area, although I did try to move around a bit. Apologies for the distorting sound and grainy picture – it seems that very loud music in a dark place is not a good combination for my camcorder.

[Lasershow] 100th Video Celebration: Parting Ways [HD]

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Well, here it is – the long-overdue celebration thing!

The music is by my brother (steeeven1, on YouTube), and is the end of a longer song called “Parting Ways” (or, as he named it on YouTube, “Hairy Saliva“, although I refuse to call it that…). Despite the name, I don’t intend to disappear any time soon. ^^;

Text is hard to read in 360p, so please use 480p. Please enable annotations if you’d like links.

[Watch in HD]

The beam-show part and the graphic (text) part were recorded separately and overlaid in editing, because I didn’t want flickery beams. I used a sheet of organza fabric for the graphic part. This is the first laser show I’ve made. It took me 11 days. It’s being played on my own laser projector, which is why it looks so much worse than the previous laser show I uploaded (mine is nothing compared to Dnstje’s projector).

EDIT: YouTube’s darkened the entire video and made the blue text extremely hard to read. *Sigh* I made it blue in the first place because it was too bright otherwise… Very disappointed, but I’m in no mood to fix it now.

[Lasershow] Kotoko – Suppuration -core- (ThePDI) [HD]

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

This is a laser show created by ThePDI for Kotoko’s “Suppuration -core-”, played on Dnstje’s 40kpps RGB laser projector. We kind of overdid it with the smoke machine at one point (that thing is overkill for such a small room).

[Watch in HD]

The projector has a 400 mW red laser, 150 mW green laser and an 89 mW blue laser, although blue is barely used in this show. Having caused a lot of dead pixels on a previous camcorder of mine by having this projector shine directly onto its image sensor, I wasn’t going to risk it again. Therefore I recorded this show from slightly underneath the projector instead of directly in front of it (I was less than a metre away from it).

The song is from the I’ve Sound / Kotoko album “Re-sublimity”. I purposely did not overdub the song in high quality, so that people can’t use my video to rip the song from, because YouTube seems to be becoming more and more stringent.
